Lying under the bonnet of this unassuming wagon is the turbocharged powertrain from a Subaru WRX
Fast, comfortable and with the surety of permanent all-wheel drive, this one features a factory-option aero kit
Japan generally sold the best versions of its cars in its home market.
Take the fifth-generation Subaru Liberty – or Subaru Legacy, as it’s known in Japan – as one example.
Our Australian examples were powered by a rubbish 2.5-litre engine. Over in Japan, the same car copped the 2.0-litre turbocharged and direct-injected flat-four-cylinder engine from the ‘VAB’ Subaru WRX (2015+).
This ‘FA20’ motor produces a meaty 221 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque, meaning it has enough power to move whatever you manage to fit in the back. This example was factory-optioned with a sports aero kit, which uplifts its exterior styling.
It also has the most detailed and thorough service history we’ve seen, which is testament to how much the first and only owner cared about it. The Subaru Legacy’s boot is huge, at 490 liters – and two child seats fit neatly in the second row of seating via ISOFIX mounting points.
With stacks of performance and the surety of permanent all-wheel drive, you can’t go past a fifth-generation Subaru Legacy 2.0 GT as your next daily driver.

This Subaru Legacy was built in June 2012 and is a ‘2.0 GT ’ model.
That means it’s powered by a 221 kW/400 Nm ‘FA20’ turbocharged flat-four engine with symmetrical 4×4 and an automatic transmission. It is the same engine used in the 2015+ Subaru WRX.
This example was purchased from USS Tokyo as a grade 4.0B vehicle, having had one owner. It features a full Subaru service history, two keys and was noted as being wholly original. Factory options include a sports aero kit and an STI Performance exhaust.
The original Japanese stereo offers Bluetooth connectivity with phone and music streaming, however we can also install an upgraded Australian Apple CarPlay stereo for an extra cost.
It was serviced by our workshop and received an oil & filter change, air filter change, and brake fluid change. It presents in above-average and original condition for its age, both inside and out. The vehicle has not been repaired or smoked in before.
Standard features include half-leather trim, electric front seats, keyless entry and start, electric parking brake, HID headlights, climate control, and auto hill hold assist.
