Over in the Japan, the Impreza WRX STI was always powered by the legendary 2.0-litre 'EJ207' engine

Compared to locally-delivered 2.5-litre cars, these JDM 2.0-litre versions hit harder, are more reliable and respond better to modification

Performance cars have many important attributes – but powertrain is easily one of the most important.

Subaru built two core versions of its WRX STI: a 2.5-litre ‘EJ257’ for export market showrooms, and a 227kW/422Nm 2.0-litre ‘EJ207’ for its own home market.

Between crappy head gaskets and poorly-sealing piston rings, export-spec EJ257 2.5-litre motors were never your first choice – but sadly were your only choice.

Until now. Over in Japan, Subaru built the Impreza WRX STI with the legendary 2.0-litre ‘Ej207’ engine right up until 2022. That means this car – differing from the local Australian one – has that awesome two-litre / six-speed / DCCD powertrain.

These 2.0-litre-powered cars wind-up hard and honestly remind us of a warmed-up SR20DET in terms of power delivery.

This is the same engine that debuted in the mighty Legacy RS with Colin McRae in World Rally, and also ran for over 20-years with continual refinement and upgrades. It is legendary stuff, and the engine we all know and love dear from Subaru.

Where the previous GD-generation WRX STIs are steadily increasing in price in Japan, the single-generation ‘GRB’ hatchback model with exactly the same running gear represents great buying at present.

You get the same flavour, a better chassis, and to us, far better looks.

Get in whilst you can.

The car pictured – 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI (EJ207)

Our Subaru Impreza was built in August 2008 and is a ‘WRX STI’ model finished in ’51E’ Aspen White.

That means it’s powered by the epic 2.0-litre straight-six ‘Ej207’ engine with 227kW power, 442Nm torque, and a six-speed manual transmission with adjustable ‘DCCD’ all-wheel drive system.

It’s a smart example overall that’s never been repaired or repainted and was graded ‘4C’ in Japan.

Export certificate and Japanese paperwork available to view on request.
