What else is performance-orientated, rear-wheel drive and sips less fuel than Nan's Mazda 3?

Not much

Toyota’s mission with its second-generation Crown Hybrid was simple.

Build a car with a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that drove and felt like a six. Toyota said the magical numbers its electrically-assisted four-cylinder powertrain needs to produce are 162kW/300Nm, and that’s exactly what it achieved with this car.

It was an important consideration for Toyota, as its existing and loyal fanbase had previously benefitted from turbocharged six-cylinders and large displacement V8s in older models.

On top of six-cylinder-like performance, the second-generation Toyota Crown Hybrid also introduced an improved electrical architecture. Using an ever-reliable and stable nickel-metal hydride battery, its updated e-motor now provides up to 105 kW/300 Nm alone.

Fuel consumption averages less than 5 L/100 km, making it more fuel efficient than most small hatchbacks. Throw in the Crown’s inherently sporty front a-arm suspension design and multi-link rear makes it quite the compelling car.

This one was also configured unusually: deep pearl red paint, a contrasting Bordeux interior with dash highlights, heated seats and steering wheel, and adaptive cruise control.

This Toyota Crown Hybrid is an ‘Athlete S‘ model that was built in April 2014. It was purchased from USS Osaka (Japan) as a 4.5B grade vehicle.

It was factory optioned in Wine red pearl with a Bordeaux interior. Other factory options include heated seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and front + rear parking sensors.

Standard features include keyless entry and start, automatic full LED headlights with auto high beams, Bluetooth connectivity, climate control and electric front seats. Its factory touchscreen infotainment system can be upgraded to support Apple CarPlay / Android Auto for extra by our workshop.

This vehicle has service stickers in the door jambs from a Japanese Toyota dealer, and was also serviced by our workshop upon its arrival into Australia. Its ‘2AR’ Toyota hybrid engine also features in other locally-delivered Australian Toyota models, meaning parts for it are readily available.

We also keep a stock holding of genuine Toyota and aftermarket parts like oil/air filters, spark plugs + more.
