The 150-series Toyota Crown is a practical and useable classic
It's original and features a complete Toyota dealership service history
Toyota has an eternal reputation for building steadfast vehicles.
Part of that reliability is the powertrain. Not only are their cars engineered and screwed together consistently, but they’re also powered by in-house engine and transmission combos that make European manufacturers weep.
Toyota’s JZ engine is legendary. Powering cars like the Toyota Supra, it is a bulletproof and ballsy 3.0-litre straight-six that remains buttery smooth and reliable well into the hundreds of thousands of kilometres.
This car is essentially the same car used in ReDriven’s review. Another factor that makes the 150-series Crown still relevant today is its ride quality. It is honestly unrivalled, with a double A-arm/multi-link rear suspension setup that simply goes down an Australian road unbelievably well
It’s quite a marvel, even today. Throw in some heavily European-influenced styling – think W124 Sacco Benzes for a second – and you end up with a sweet classic car that’ll look after your wallet instead of sapping it dry.
As a final point, the JZS155 Crown is an authentic Japanese Domestic Market car – so tell that to your mates driving Aussie-delivered 86s pretending they’re into “JDM”!
The car pictured – 1998 Toyota Crown Royal
This Toyota Crown was built in July 1998 and is a ‘Royal Saloon’ model. It was purchased from USS Tokyo as a grade 4.0B vehicle in original condition without any repairs or defects and with a certified odometer.
It’s powered by Toyota’s legendary 3.0-litre straight-six ‘2JZ-GE’ engine with 162kW power, 294Nm torque, and a four-speed automatic transmission (A340). It is rear-wheel drive. Standard features include a fully functioning EMV screen with digital climate control, six-speaker stereo, electric front seats, traction control, dual airbags, electric swing air vents (too cool!), and a wool interior.
It boasts a complete Toyota dealership service history with over 14 invoices for services completed. The vehicle is in impeccable condition mechanically and drives incredibly well for its age. There are no creaks or rattles from its suspension, and it’s evident that numerous parts have been replaced over time.
The exterior presents well, too. The original pearl-white over grey two-tone paint shows no signs of yellowing or UV damage, and its exterior rubbers and trims are still crisp. There are some minor scratches on the leading edges of its bumpers, but it presents honestly for its age and wears its patina well.
The underside of the car is also in excellent condition and free from corrosion. The vehicle has never been smoked in, and it still retains its genuine Toyota Antimacassars for that authentic JDM flavour.
