There's no denying where Toyota drew inspiration from with its 150-series Crown
And unlike a Benz, the Crown offers value for money and inherent reliability
The Toyota Crown is a stalwart of the Japanese vehicle market. It is an upmarket three-box sedan that represents the watermark for general motoring in its country.
Over a sixty-plus-year production life, its manufacturer, Toyota, has pilfered influence from all over the world. And in no other Toyota Crown is it more evident, with Bruno Sacco’s venerable W124 mid-sized and W201 compact Mercedes sedans clearly a source of inspiration.
Its design is the only link, however. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz products it’s modelled off, the Toyota is far more reliable and fitted with a superior driveline.
You’ll discover a well-sorted chassis, a bulletproof Toyota A-series automatic transmission, and the venerable 1JZ straight-six engine beneath this Toyota Crown.
It goes down the road with a remarkable smoothness and quality that begs the question: why aren’t newer cars anywhere near as comfortable and enjoyable to drive?
The car pictured – 1997 Toyota Crown Royal
This Toyota Crown was built in July 1997 and is a “Royal Saloon” model.
That means it’s powered by a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated straight-six ‘1JZ-GE’ engine with 147 kW power and 255 Nm torque and features a four-speed automatic transmission (A340). The vehicle is rear-wheel drive.
The vehicle was purchased from USS Osaka as a 4.0B vehicle as a one-owner example that’s never been repaired before. It comes with some service history from Japan, as well as proof of its timing belt being replaced at 98,000km. The vehicle was serviced upon arriving in Australia.
The vehicle presents in excellent condition for its age, and its paint is wholly original. There is a minor imperfection on the leading edge of the passenger side of its front bumper. Its interior is in fantastic condition, with there being no signs of durries in this car.
The centre EMV screen is dim and not visible; however, all other functions work. If desired, we can provide a genuine Toyota climate control / double-DIN centre screen setup that enables the installation of Apple CarPlay / Android Auto.
Standard features include traction control, ABS, automatic headlights, remote central locking, climate control, electric seats, heated side mirrors, a cup holder, wool seats and a CD changer.
