If the brand applies its legendary Pajero nameplate to a vehicle, it always makes sure it’s on a 4×4 that’s both capable and worthy.

The Pajero Junior, the rarest of the set, is arguably the most desirable. The Pajero Junior is a beefed-up version of the kei-class Pajero Mini.

Similar to the Jimny Sierra, the Pajero Junior is a widebody model. It means that the Pajero Junior did not qualify for low-cost kei class registration in Japan, which prohibited sales when new.

That makes it rare today. It features the usual treats of a low-range transfer case, excellent approach angles and a light kerb weight, making it ideal for use off-road in Australia.

The car pictured – 1998 Mitsubishi Pajero Junior ZR-2 4×4

This Mitsubishi Pajero Junior was built in March 1998 and is an ‘ZR-2’ trim level.

That means it’s powered by a 1-1-litre turbocharged ‘4A31’ four-cylinder engine with 59kW of power and 100Nm of torque. The vehicle is primarily rear-wheel drive, with a selectable four-wheel drive mode in either high or low range, and features a five-speed manual transmission.

Externally, there are imperfections on the passenger side of the rear bumper and a minor dent on the rear quarter panel. The interior is in good shape, with a handful of imperfections on the dashboard and loose fabric trim on its door panels.

Taking into account the type of vehicle it is, we consider it above average overall. This example was factory optioned with Bosch spot lights and also features a suspension lift, a factory rear LSD installed locally, aftermarket wheels, a JAOS front bash plate, JAOS mud flaps, a cute aftermarket exhaust and plenty of other extras.

It was purchased from a private seller in Japan.
