As far as novelties go, it doesn't get much better than this

Its rear-wheel drive and JZ-accepting platform also make it the ideal project car

We saw this Toyota Crown Ambulance listed at a backwater Japanese car auction and had to have it.

It is original and just as you’d expect condition-wise when considering its mileage. As a genuine ex-service vehicle, it was clearly well kept and routinely maintained, as it provided care to a rural Japanese community once upon a time.

The visual sirens work, the Japanese audible siren with ’emergency mode’ works, and the PA system does too, meaning you can yell things at people from inside the vehicle. The air conditioning and all other functions work too; it is incredibly well kept inside.

Its 1G straight-six engine could be replaced with a JZ, UZ, or whatever else you really want. If you plan to buy this car to turn into a drift or motorsport machine, we would happily discuss a sponsorship deal if you were to buy the car.

It is on the National Vehicle Database (NEVDIS) and RAV too, meaning it can be road registered if presented as road legal. After discussing at length with numerous authorities, the consensus is that making it road legal consists of a black and non-transparent vinyl cover – think a big shower cap – that totally covers the lights and is easily removable.

Any skilled boat or marine trimmer can help create a complete cover for the lights to ensure they meet roadworthy standards.

The car pictured – 1992 Toyota Crown wagon ambulance (GS136)

This Toyota Crown wagon was built in May 1992 and was purchased from USS Osaka (Japan) as a 4.0B grade vehicle.

As a ‘GS136’ 8th generation Toyota Crown, it is rear-wheel and features a ‘1G’ 2.0-litre straight-six with 99 kW / 176 newton metres and an automatic transmission. The engine is in excellent operating order and is also neat and dry.

It was converted into an ambulance when new and was noted as being a “doctor’s support car”. The car has working sirens, a functioning PA system, air conditioning, power steering, power side mirrors and dual rear wipers.

It still has its stretcher and all vehicle protection apparatus for using it safely with the vehicle. The car remains in original and excellent condition overall, despite some minor and low-speed parking damage on the driver’s side rear bumper area. The interior is equally as tidy, and the car still wears its original Toyota Crown antimacassars.
