The 964 is arguably the peak 911; it signals the end of a 50-year legacy that started it all.

It's also the rarest generation of Porsche 911 ever produced.

There are moments when a brand gets it right.

And in the case of Porsche, its 964-generation 911 is that moment. Air-cooled, simple and pure, it marks a time where age-old air-cooled traditions unite with a modern and component chassis.

But it wasn’t for long. The 964-generation Porsche 911 was abruptly discontinued as a financial crisis swept through Europe in the mid-1990s. It ran for only five years, making it the shortest generation of 911 produced and in the fewest numbers, too.

Combining the best parts of modernity, timelessness, and the unique trait of being air-cooled, the 964-generation now stands out as an icon. It does not bear the postmodern design tropes found in both the later 993-generation and 996-generation 911s, and more honestly, it represents what made the 911 special to begin with.

In turn, the 964 has become highly sought after globally, particularly in right-hand drive. This particular example was delivered new to Japan and has been lovingly cared for by all its custodians to date.

The car pictured – 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet (964)

This Porsche 911 Cabriolet was first registered in December 1990 and delivered new to Japan through the official importer, Mitsuwa. It was special ordered in ’22D – Slate Grey Metallic’ with a black interior, in right-hand drive, and with a Tiptronic automatic transmission and Cup wheels.

Mitsuwa raced Porsches all throughout the 1970s and 1980s globally and was the official distributor of Porsche vehicles in Japan until Germany took over in the mid-2000s. The car was maintained as per schedule until December 2002, when it was exported to New Zealand at 71,027 km.

Powerhaus NZ performed a major engine overhaul in 2010 at 109,180 km, along with routine maintenance conducted by its NZ owner. An invoice shows the extent of work carried out. A new convertible room was also fitted by Powerhaus NZ in 2010, alongside a renewed heating and cooling system, a new alternator, and a refresh of the air conditioning system. Invoices for all work carried out have been retained.

In 2020, Ross White Panel & Paint conducted a repaint of the vehicle in its original colour to a high standard. The invoice for this work has also been retained.

In 2022, the vehicle was purchased by its current custodian and exported to Australia with 168,986 km. Over the past four years, the current owner has maintained the car to a high standard and further enhanced it with Bilstein VE3 coilovers and HKS springs, a new air conditioning control unit, and most recently a major service by Autohaus Hamilton

This latest service by Autohaus Hamilton includes a detailed report on current vehicle condition, but work conducted involved a major service with new distributors, leads, plugs, brake fluid, valve adjustment, and major oil leak repair at a cost of $10,076.

The vehicle presents in excellent condition inside and out. The roof functions as expected and remains unrepaired and as new. The car also comes with a genuine Porsche Tonneau cover. The engine feels great and does not leak oil, which in itself details how well and current its maintenance schedule is.
