Nissan reserves its Skyline badge for its most dynamic driver's cars
This one offers an intoxicating blend of a performance V6, hybrid fuel-saving tech and a rear-wheel drive layout
Where each brand has its own ‘way’ of doing things, Nissans often feel more sporty and athletic than the rest.
It’s maintained this status quo with its legendary Nissan Skyline for decades now, having built the sharp and dynamic performance car for well-over 50-years.
Nissan has generally reserved the Skyline badge for high-performance six-cylinder sedans. The 2014 Nissan Skyline Hybrid features a 225kW/350Nm version of Nissan’s VQ35DE V6 engine – as seen in the Nissan 350Z – that’s further augmented by a hybrid system.
Total power output is over 240kW, and it achieves fuel economy figures equal to a small hatchback (offical claim 5.5L/100KM). In the real-world we’ve seen fuel use around 6 litres per 100km, which makes this performance sedan as fuel efficient as a Toyota Corolla.
Its on-board electric motor generates a maximum torque of 290Nm alone. All of that tech is wrapped in a sophisticated rear-wheel drive platform with a double wishbone front end and tidy independent multi-link rear.
It has all the usual mod cons too: electric and heated leather seats, adaptive cruise control, 360-view camera with front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitor and automatic emergency braking.
It’s a clever car that shuns the idea of an SUV for better driving dynamics and hybrid fuel-saving tech instead.
