There's nothing like a short-wheelbase 4x4 – compact, great off-road and easy on the eyes
and this thoroughbred is a limited-edition Type S model, too
Short-wheelbase (SWB) 4x4s are the ones to have.
Their compact footprint makes them easier to drive and manage off-road, but they also look the best too. Stubby and short, they’re as high off the ground as they are long, and they clearly don’t look like the four-door Aussie-delivered one your mate’s mum once had.
This example is rare in being a ‘Rx Type S’ limited-edition model. That means it features metallic black paint, faux carbon fibre interior trims and an electric sunroof. Other incredible touchpoints include an old-school Toyota front badge, climate control air conditioning and a sporty interior trim.
We try our best to find good examples of the short-wheelbase 90-series Prado, and we come across one decent manual example every 12 months or so. We love this example because of its specification and colour – Land Cruisers look tough in black!
Original and rust-free examples such as this one are extremely uncommon now in Japan, so get in whilst it’s hot.
The car pictured – 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado RX Type S
This Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was built in May 1997 and is an ‘RX Type S’ trim level with a petrol engine.
That means it’s powered by a 2.7-litre ‘3RZ’ four-cylinder petrol engine with 110 kW of power and 235 Nm of torque. It features 4×4 with a four-speed automatic transmission and low-range transfer case.
Factory equipment on the RX Type S model includes dual airbags, climate control air conditioning, sports cloth trim, carbon-look interior inlays and remote central locking. The car is pictured with an aftermarket wheel, however it will be fitted with its original steering wheel and airbag prior to registration in Australia.
This vehicle was purchased as a one-owner car from Tokyo, Japan, and comes with a Toyota service history. Upon arriving in Australia, the vehicle will be serviced and given a decent one-over.
It’s exterior paint would be considered to be in above average condition. The interior is in good shape, however the centre gauge binnacle is not functioning. There are no stains or marks on the trim, nor any noticeable scratches on its interior trims.
