When you want to go places, nothing beats a turbo diesel Toyota

reliable, simple and good-looking, the third-gen Toyota Hilux Surf is quintessentially a cult classic

Toyota builds the most robust vehicles in the world.

Take a look at the challenges that Top Gear UK put its Hilux through. You’ll find a Toyota Hilux on someone’s farm, on a builder’s construction site, and even at the forefront of war. It is a legendary nameplate that is synonymous with hard yakka.

During the late 1980s, the sport utility vehicle became a thing. These original wagons were robust 4x4s built with the best bones of a commercial vehicle, albeit with much-needed luxury and menities. This example’s 1990s solution for a reverse camera—a mirror that pops out from the spoiler at the press of a button—is both handy and fun to use.

Past the gimmicks lies a genuine 4×4 tuned for good road manners, with a lengthened wheelbase, a widened track, and coil springs all speaking to this notion. The mechanically injected 1KZ turbo diesel makes all the right noises and pulls hard for a big-displacement four. The idea of an off-road-based wagon was a novel concept that birthed a whole segment of vehicles, with the most closely related being products like the Toyota Fortuner.

Nothing hits like the original, though, with its era-specific styling and old-school workhorse powertrain.

This Toyota Hilux Surf is an SSR-G Widebody model built in June 1997. It was imported into Australia in the early 2000s.

It was configured with a 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel 1KZ-TE engine, a four-speed automatic and Light Turquoise Blue metallic (K93) paintwork. As a top-spec ‘SSR-G’ model, it features a power sunroof, climate control, a colour-screen compass, an altimeter and barometer, dual airbags, a power fold-out rear mirror, and central locking.

The vehicle has a service history from Japan and has undergone constant maintenance and love throughout its life. Upgrades include a Hilux disc-brake rear end, new suspension with a two-inch lift, and genuine Japanese three-piece off-road wheels with a matching fifth for the back.

It presents in above-average condition for its age. Recent maintenance includes an engine and driveline fluid change, a coolant change, and wheel alignment.
