The second-generation Pajero hits the mark in terms of modernity, off-road performance and style

We present a true time-warp served in the best spec & colour way

We love this Mitsubishi Pajero for a few reasons.

First is its condition. Dependable, reliable and useable cars like these rarely survive the tests of time. They don’t survive because they are driven to buggery off road, in the snow – literally destroyed doing what they were made for.

This example has not partaken in such noble feats, but its absence makes it all the more precious. It’s had one owner since new, features remarkably low mileage, and has evidently been stored indoors, protected from the elements throughout its life.

The second reason is its trim level and configuration. It is a wide-track, higher-spec model equipped with the brand’s steadfast ‘4M40’ turbo diesel, sick bronze glass and a mad set of factory option Bosch spotties.

Throw on the navy-over-silver two-tone paint complete with a gold pinstripe, and you have a dead-set winner.

As we say this with cars like this, we honestly find around three to four Pajeros in this condition each year, and we are only ever fortunate to buy a couple every 12 months.

The car pictured – 1995 Mitsubishi Pajero XR-II Wide (V26WG)

This Mitsubishi Pajero was manufactured in September 1995 and is a ‘XR-II Wide’ trim level with a four-speed automatic transmission. It was purchased from USS Tokyo (car auction house) as a grade 4.5B example having had one owner from new.

That means it’s powered by a 2.8-litre ‘4M40’ turbo diesel four-cylinder engine with 103kW of power and 313Nm of torque. Aside from Mitsubishi’s super-select all-wheel drive system that allows four- and two-drive in the dry, it also features a low-range transfer case and a centre diff lock.

As a ‘sports’ trim level, it features high-grade cloth seats with multiple points of adjustment, climate control, a dedicated rear heater for the second row, a triple-gauge pod with inclinometer and altimeter, a premium stereo system with CD player, electronically adjustable dampers with three settings, front cup holders plus power steering, windows and mirrors.

Factory Mitsubishi options include bronze-tinted exterior glass and a front sports bar with Bosch fog lights. The vehicle presents in exceptional condition for its age, inside and out – a testament to its low mileage.

The shifter detent feels like new, and it drives without any creaks or rattles. The engine starts smoothly and runs cleanly, while the driveline exhibits no signs of wear or abuse.

Its exterior paintwork, decals and accessories have all survived intact and in excellent condition.
